Mom & Transmission
What our mothers passed on to us (and what we pass on in turn)
There are legacies that are not passed down through blood, but through actions. Looks. Clothes. Sweet words in the morning, or the way you hem a skirt.
From our mothers, we have often inherited much more than a first name: a style, a strength, a philosophy of life. They have passed on to us a way of loving, of resisting, of asserting ourselves.
And today, we in turn become conveyors: of values, gentleness, and beauty.

What we treasure:
-
A taste for beautiful, durable, and natural materials
-
The idea that well-chosen clothing can boost confidence
-
Respect for the body, its rhythm, and its changes
-
The reflex to take care of others... and (sometimes) oneself
What we give back:
-
A freer, more confident femininity
-
The right to choose who you want to be, beyond role models
-
The desire to slow down, to consume less but better

At 23 Mai Paris, we believe that every piece tells a story. The story of a woman, a generation, a bond that transcends time. Wearing a well-tailored garment is sometimes like wearing a memory, an emotion, a trace of those who loved us before we even knew how to love ourselves.
What we treasure most from our mothers
Our mothers have left us invisible treasures that shape the women and mothers we are today:
A taste for beautiful, durable, and natural materials
That wool sweater she wore to rock us to sleep, that soft nightgown she wore to comfort us at night. Our mothers knew how to choose fabrics that lasted, that could be passed down, that retained a scent, a memory. Today, we continue this tradition by choosing organic cotton clothing that is gentle on our skin and that of our babies.
The idea that well-chosen clothing can boost confidence
Do you remember your mother getting ready for a special occasion? That moment when she put on her favorite dress, sprayed on a little perfume, and suddenly lit up? Our mothers knew that an outfit that makes you feel beautiful can change your day. Even when you're tired or overwhelmed, dressing up for yourself is an act of self-love.
Respect for the body, its rhythm, and its changes
They taught us that our bodies deserve to be celebrated, not judged. Some showed us their stretch marks as if they were medals, others remained silent but conveyed through their kind gaze the idea that every body tells a beautiful and unique story.

The reflex to take care of others... and (sometimes) oneself
Our mothers showed us generosity and devotion. But they also taught us, sometimes despite themselves, that you can't pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself also means taking care of those you love.
Small daily rituals
The morning cup of tea. The song hummed while washing the dishes. The evening hug before bedtime. These rituals, often unconscious, become our own motherly rituals. We repeat them without thinking, and that is how the tradition is passed on, silently.
Silent transmissions: what we inherit without knowing it
There are legacies that we only become aware of much later, often when we become mothers ourselves:
How to console
How did your mother hold you when you cried? The way she rocked you, whispered "it's going to be okay," and put her hand on your back... You may be doing the same thing with your own baby today, without even thinking about it.
The relationship with food and the body
Our mothers passed on to us their relationship with food, with the family table, and with the pleasure of eating together. Some taught us to savor food, others to be wary of it. Today, we have the power to choose what we pass on to our children.
The place of work and motherhood
Our mothers navigated between work and family in a different era. Some sacrificed their careers, others juggled guilt. Their experiences, whatever they may be, help us chart our own course.
The language of love
Some mothers said "I love you" all the time. Others expressed it through a carefully prepared meal, ironed clothes, or a silent presence. What is your love language? And how do you convey it?

What we choose NOT to pass on
Passing things on also means sorting through them. We don't have to keep everything. We consciously choose to leave some things behind:
- Permanent guilt – Our mothers often carried an immense mental burden, sometimes in silence. We can choose to ask for help, delegate, or say no.
- Maternal perfectionism – The idea that a good mother must do everything perfectly is exhausting. We teach our children that being "good enough" is already wonderful.
- Self-sacrifice – Our mothers sometimes forgot about themselves for our sake. We can honor them by taking care of ourselves, showing them that a fulfilled mother is the greatest gift we can give our children.
- Comments about the body – "Stand up straight," "You've put on weight," "Hide your curves"... Certain phrases, even when said with love, have left their mark. It's up to us to speak differently to our daughters and sons.
What we pass on to our children in return
In turn, we write history for our children. And what we pass on to them is different, enriched by our experiences and our era:
A freer, more confident femininity
You can be a mother and still be a woman. You can breastfeed and still feel beautiful. You can be tired and still want to look good. These contradictions are not contradictions at all: they are facets of the same strength.
The right to choose who you want to be
Our daughters and sons will grow up knowing that there is no single way to be a mother, to be a woman, to be oneself. They will see a mother who dares, who tries, who sometimes makes mistakes, but who moves forward.
The desire to slow down, to consume less but better
Rather than accumulating, we choose pieces that last, that have meaning, that tell a story. A well-made garment can last for years, and sometimes even generations.
The importance of community among women
Our mothers were sometimes alone in their motherhood. We are lucky to be able to surround ourselves, support each other, and share our doubts and joys with other mothers. We also pass on this sisterhood.

The right to imperfection
We show our children that it's okay to bake a cake that doesn't turn out right, forget an appointment, cry from exhaustion... and still be a great mom. Perfection doesn't exist, and that's a good thing.
Breastfeeding: a unique moment of bonding
Breastfeeding your baby is one of the most intimate acts of transmission there is. You pass on antibodies, of course, but also:
- Love, through the gaze exchanged while feeding
- Security through physical warmth
- A rhythm, that of patience and listening
- Confidence, that of a body that knows what it is doing
And to fully enjoy these moments, it is essential to feel comfortable. Our nursing tops and Breastfeeding dresses are designed to accompany you during these precious moments: soft fabrics reminiscent of those our mothers chose for us, elegant cuts that celebrate your femininity, and discreet openings that make breastfeeding easier.
Because every feed is a moment of bonding, and you deserve to experience it in comfort and beauty.
Heirlooms: those treasures we hold dear
Some objects are passed down through generations and carry with them a family history:
- Mom's jewelry – A ring, a necklace, a watch... These items worn close to the heart connect us to those who wore them before us.
- The family recipe – Grandma's cake, Mom's soup, Sunday dinner... These recipes are precious heirlooms to be passed on.
- Yellowed photos – These images from another time remind us of where we come from and help us tell the story to our children.
- The favorite garment – That dress your mother wore when she was pregnant with you, that cardigan knitted by your grandmother... Some garments are worth more than their weight in fabric.
- The passed-down comfort blanket – Some families keep the comfort blanket from generation to generation. A little worn, a little faded, but so full of love.
Creating new rituals for passing on knowledge
Transmission is not just about receiving: it's also about creating. Here are a few ideas for weaving new threads between you and your children:
The mother-child journal
Write to your baby from the moment they are born. Tell them about their first days, your emotions, your hopes. One day, this journal will become their treasure.
The generational memory box
Create a box where you can place items from each generation: a photo of your mother, a maternity bracelet, a lock of your baby's hair, a note written in your own handwriting.
The garment photographed
Take a photo of yourself in your Breastfeeding dress with your baby. One day, perhaps your daughter will wear a similar dress with her own child, and the photos will echo each other across time.
The family song
Choose a lullaby, a song, a tune. Sing it to your baby, just as your mother may have sung it to you. This melody will become the soundtrack of your family history.
The transmission meal
Once a year, cook a family meal together. Even with a toddler who only mixes the flour, the gesture counts. That's how recipes are passed down.
Wearing a piece of clothing is sometimes like wearing a memory.
At 23 Mai Paris, we believe that every piece tells a story. The story of a woman, a generation, a bond that transcends time.
Wearing a well-tailored garment sometimes means wearing a memory, an emotion, a trace of those who loved us even before we knew how to love ourselves.
That's why we create nursing clothes that last, that can be kept, passed on, or simply cherished as a reminder of such an intense and beautiful period of life.
Our pieces are designed to accompany all mothers: those who follow in their own mothers' footsteps, those who forge their own path, and those who forge new bonds with their babies every day.
A tribute to all mothers
To our mothers, who did their best with what they had. To our grandmothers, who paved the way. To ourselves, today's mothers, who carry on this legacy and transform it. And to our children, to whom we pass on the most beautiful thing of all: love, quite simply.
And you, what have you received? And what would you like to pass on?
We would love to hear from you. Share with us your fondest memories of women passing on knowledge to one another:
- What gesture of your mother's do you repeat today?
- What object have you kept safe?
- What do you want to pass on to your children?
