How to breastfeed for the first time?

Practical guide to successful breastfeeding from day one

If you are expecting a baby and are already learning about breastfeeding, you are on the right track! Breastfeeding is a unique and natural experience, but it can also be difficult at first. Good preparation can make the difference between a frustrating experience and a beautiful connection from day one.

At 23 Mai Paris, we know that breastfeeding is easier when you are informed, independent, and comfortable. That's why we've put together this guide containing everything you need to know (and have) before your first feed.

Learn how breastfeeding works

Although breastfeeding is an instinctive process, understanding how your body works will give you more confidence. Learn about:

  • The correct way for the baby to latch on to the breast
  • Milk production (and its timing)
  • How to know if your baby is feeding enough
  • Breastfeeding positions and signs of a good latch

Additional tip: Follow lactation consultant accounts or attend a prenatal workshop. This will give you a lot of confidence!

Have functional clothing for breastfeeding from day one

The first feeding can take place a few minutes after delivery. Ideally, your clothes should be ready to facilitate access to the breast while allowing you to feel confident and beautiful.

At 23 Mai Paris, we create nursing clothes with special cuts, soft fabrics, and modern designs, designed by moms like you.

Discover our collection of Breastfeeding t-shirts, ideal for home, hospital, or even going out with your baby. Some of our favorite styles:

And for cold days, our nursing sweatshirts are perfect for keeping you warm without sacrificing easy access to the breast.

Eat well before breastfeeding

Eating well before and during breastfeeding is not only beneficial for your health, but also ensures more stable milk production. A few weeks before giving birth, it is recommended that you start eating a nutrient-rich diet focused on hydration and energy.

Here is a guide to recommended foods:

  • Fruits rich in vitamin C (oranges, guavas, strawberries)
  • Leafy green vegetables (spinach, Swiss chard, kale)
  • Lean proteins (chicken, turkey, eggs, legumes)
  • Dairy products (plain yogurt, milk, fresh cheese)
  • Whole grains (oats, brown rice, whole wheat bread)
  • Seeds and dried fruits (almonds, walnuts, flax seeds)
  • Plenty of natural water and caffeine-free herbal teas such as fennel or chamomile tea.

Preparing your body in advance will make the transition to the first days of breastfeeding easier.

A selection of balanced meals

Prepare a basic breastfeeding kit

Having a few essential items on hand can help you avoid inconveniences and enjoy this period more:

  • Nipple cream (ideally pure lanolin)
  • Absorbent discs
  • Breast pump (manual or electric, if you plan to use one)
  • Breastfeeding bracelet to remind you which side you last breastfed on
  • Breastfeeding accessories such as milk storage bags and comfortable bras

Have realistic expectations (and lots of patience)

The first few days can be intense. Your milk coming in, sore nipples, uncertainty about whether you are "doing it right"... it's all part of the process. You are not alone. If you have doubts or feel frustrated, ask a lactation consultant for help. You can also talk to other mothers who have been through the same thing.
