🧘‍♀️ Postnatal yoga: gently regaining your body

Becoming a mother is a total upheaval: in the heart, in everyday life... and in the body. After giving birth, we often want to "find ourselves", but without pressure, without overly athletic goals, just with kindness. Postnatal yoga is a wonderful way to do just that, while respecting your own rhythm and sensations 💛

Here's why (and how) postnatal yoga can become your ally in this new stage.

🌼 1. What exactly is postnatal yoga?

Postnatal yoga is a gentle practice adapted to the specific needs of new mothers. It aims to :

Gently strengthen the perineum and deep abs
Relieve tension in the back, shoulders and pelvis
Improve posture (often compromised by breastfeeding or babywearing)
Reduce stress and promote mental well-being

It's also a time to reconnect with yourself, in a daily life often 100% focused on baby 👶

🕊️ 2. When to start?

It is generally recommended to wait until the postnatal visit (around 6 to 8 weeks after delivery) before resuming any physical activity, even gentle ones.

⚠️ If you are having a Caesarean section, talk to your midwife or doctor to get the green light.

🧘♀️ 3. Simple postures to do at home

Here are 3 gentle movements you can try at home:

🐱 The cat/cow (spinal mobility)

On all fours, inhale as you arch your back (looking up), exhale as you round your back (looking down).
➡️ Relieves back pain and activates breathing.

🌬️ Abdominal breathing

Lying on your back, place your hands on your stomach. Inhale as you expand your belly, exhale as you gently retract it.
➡️ Ideal for reactivating deep abs without rushing.

🍃 The child's posture

On your knees, buttocks on your heels, bend your torso forward, arms stretched out on the floor.
➡️ Relaxes your back, neck and mind. A real hug for yourself.

🧺 Tip 23 Mai Paris : practice these postures on a cozy mat, in comfortable clothing (our nursing sweats are perfect for this ✨).

🤱 4 And what about baby?

You can include baby in your sessions! Many postnatal yoga classes are designed to include baby in the practice. This strengthens the bond while allowing moms to relax and move around a bit.

💬 So me moms even find that these moments shared with their child are among the sweetest of the day.

💡 5. Where to practice postnatal yoga?

  • At home, with guided videos (there's a lot of great content available online, both free and for a fee)
  • In a studio or perinatal center (in Paris, many locations offer courses in small groups)
  • Outdoors, weather permitting 🌞

🧡 Regaining your balance, one breath at a time

Postnatal yoga is not about "getting your old body back" it's about fully inhabiting the body of today, with its strengths, its scars and its new beauty.
Take this time for yourself. Treat yourself gently. And remember: your body gave birth. It deserves all the love in the world 💫
