What temperature should you keep in your baby's room in the winter?
The ideal temperature is between 18 and 20 °C, regardless of the season: comfortable enough so that the baby doesn't get cold, without overheating (a risk factor for sleep). Place a thermometer near the crib (not near the radiator) and air out the room for a few minutes in the morning and evening, even in winter.
How should you dress your baby for bed in the winter?
What to wear to bed depends on the actual temperature in the room:
- 18–20 °C: long-sleeved cotton onesie + velvet or thick cotton pajamas + TOG 2 sleep sack.
- Below 18 °C: Add a layer, increase the TOG rating to 2.5 or 3, and put on socks.
- 20–22 °C: Dress lightly (long-sleeved onesie + TOG 1.5 sleep sack).
Golden rule: Never put blankets, comforters, or pillows in the crib until the baby is about 18 months old (suffocation hazard). A sleep sack is the only safe option. Check out our pajamas and our Kids collection.
How should I dress my baby indoors during the day?
In a heated room (19–21 °C), the rule is simple: one more layer than you’re wearing—no more. A long-sleeved onesie and pajamas or a light sleepwear set are usually enough. Avoid overheating your baby: when lying down or being relatively inactive, they don’t need several thick layers in a heated room.
How should I dress my baby for going out in the winter?
Opt for layering light clothing rather than wearing a single, very thick garment:
- 10–15 °C: long-sleeved onesie + light sweater + fleece or corduroy pants + socks + light hat.
- Below 10 °C: onesie + sweater + fleece-lined racing suit, hat that covers the ears, mittens, warm closed-toe shoes.
- Below 0 °C: Limit the duration of your outings and wear an extra layer under your wetsuit.
The head is the primary area where body heat is lost: a well-fitting hat is essential. Hands and feet get cold quickly: mittens and closed-toe shoes are a priority.
How can you tell if your baby is cold or too hot?
The best indicator isn't the hands or feet (which are naturally cooler), but the back of the neck. Slide your hand down the back of their neck: warm and dry = the right temperature; cold = add a layer; damp or sweaty = remove a layer. If they're overheating, offer a feeding as well: breast milk naturally hydrates and regulates body temperature.
What are the must-have baby accessories for winter?
- A hat is the number one accessory for preventing heat loss.
- Mittens for little hands.
- A onesie or a baby sleeping bag for the stroller.
- A TOG 2 or 3 sleep sack for nighttime (never use a blanket).
- A room thermometer and a humidifier to keep the air healthy even with the heat on.
