Breastfeeding and Work in France

Tips for continuing to breastfeed after maternity leave!

Returning to work after maternity leave is an important step for new mothers, and many want to continue breastfeeding while juggling their new responsibilities. Being a mom shouldn't be incompatible with your professional development.

1. Anticipate and organize the transition

Prepare your baby and their childcare arrangements

A few weeks before returning to work, gradually get your baby used to feeding in ways other than breastfeeding (bottle, sippy cup, spoon). Practice with the person who will be caring for your baby to ensure a smooth transition.

Build up a milk supply

If you want to pump your milk, start building up a small supply 2 to 3 weeks before you resume breastfeeding. Freeze the portions in suitable bags and label them with the date to make them easier to manage.

2. Organization at work

Choosing the right equipment

A good breast pump is essential! Choose an efficient, portable electric model. You will also need airtight containers to store the milk and an insulated bag to transport it.

3. Adjust your breastfeeding rhythm

Breastfeed on demand outside of working hours

In the morning, afternoon, evening, and on weekends, continue to breastfeed your baby whenever you are together. This helps maintain breastfeeding and preserve that unique bond.

Manage potential decrease in lactation

If you notice a drop in your milk production, drink plenty of water, rest as soon as possible, and eat foods that promote milk production (fennel, almonds, brewer's yeast, etc.).

4. Listen to yourself and adapt

Every mother and every baby is different. Some mothers will continue to breastfeed exclusively, while others will alternate with infant formula. There are no hard and fast rules: the important thing is to find a balance that works for you.

Tips for making breastfeeding at work more comfortable

There are many things you can do to feel comfortable and safe during this time. Here are a few tips:

1. Wear functional and stylish nursing clothes.

Forget about taking off your top or feeling uncomfortable while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding t-shirts and sweatshirts with hidden access allow you to breastfeed your baby (or pump milk) quickly and discreetly.

  • An extra T-shirt in case of an accident

3. Stay hydrated and eat well
