Our maternity sweaters will keep you warm all winter long, starting from the moment your baby is born: at the hospital, on the way home, and during those first feedings. Warm, roomy, and featuring two side zippers, they make it easy to breastfeed without having to take off your sweater or expose yourself.
What is a maternity sweater?
A maternity sweater is designed for the period around childbirth: it remains comfortable over a still-rounded belly, keeps you warm, and is breastfeeding-friendly. It can be worn from the end of pregnancy through the baby’s first few months.
Our sweaters have two side zippers, making them suitable for use right from the first feeding. For a wider selection, check out our maternity clothing.
What should you pack in your hospital bag in winter?
Pack two sweaters or zip-up sweatshirts, plus a few Breastfeeding t-shirts to wear underneath. In the maternity ward, it’s often warm in the rooms and cool in the hallways: layering helps you adjust to the temperature.
Choose loose-fitting clothes that are easy to put on, even after giving birth, and in colors that make you feel good. For the complete list, read our article on packing for a winter hospital bag.
Which styles should you choose for maternity wear?
When staying at the maternity ward, prioritize comfort:
- fleece sweatshirts (HEARTS, LOVE, LOVE CLUB), soft and loose-fitting;
- hooded sweaters, which are easy to slip on and very cozy;
- Knitwear (ASSIA, COSSIMA), for outings and coming home.
Prices range from about €34.50 for certain models on sale to €81. See also our maternity sweaters.
How does the breastfeeding opening work?
Each sweater has two zippers, one on each side of the chest. To breastfeed, simply unzip the side you're feeding from: your baby has direct access to your breast, and the rest of the sweater stays in place.
During the first few days, when feedings are frequent, it’s a real convenience: no need to pull up a sweater, nothing to take off—even when you’re half asleep.
What should I wear when visitors come to see me at the maternity ward?
A loose-fitting sweater paired with leggings or soft pants is the perfect outfit: you'll look presentable for visitors while staying comfortable as your body recovers.
With zippers, you can breastfeed in front of your loved ones without exposing yourself or leaving the room. For more tips, read our article on discreet breastfeeding.
Can you wear a maternity sweater right after giving birth?
Yes, this is actually the perfect time: your belly is still rounded and sensitive, and a loose-fitting sweater won't constrict anything. Soft fabrics and flat seams are also gentle on skin that's still healing.
After a C-section, avoid anything that's tight around the waist and opt for loose-fitting, long sweaters. If you're not sure, ask your midwife for advice.
How can I stay warm while breastfeeding?
Wear a Breastfeeding t-shirt base layer under your sweater: when you unzip it, your stomach stays covered. Since the zippers are in the same place on all our clothes, you unzip both layers on the same side.
For more tips, read our article on how to layer up in winter while breastfeeding.
Is a maternity sweater a good baby shower gift?
Yes, it's a wonderful gift for the new mom: useful right from the hospital and throughout the winter, it shows that you're thinking of her just as much as the baby. A design embroidered with the child's first name makes it even more personal.
For more ideas, check out our selection of gifts for new moms.
What size should I choose?
Choose one size larger than your usual size to wear the sweater during the later stages of pregnancy and right after giving birth, then your usual pre-pregnancy size if you plan to keep it for later.
The product pages list the model's height and size, which is helpful for getting your bearings.
Can you continue to wear it after breastfeeding?
Yes. Once the zippers are zipped up, it's just like any other sweater—one you'll continue to wear every winter, long after weaning.
That's what makes it a long-lasting purchase: it lasts through pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and the years that follow.
How do you care for a maternity sweater?
Wash it at 30 °C on the delicate or wool cycle, inside out and with the zippers closed. Frequent washing is normal with a newborn: this gentle cycle helps preserve the fabric.
Lay the knit flat to dry and avoid using a dryer. Specific instructions are provided on each product page.
How long does it take for the clothing to be shipped?
Clothing is shipped within 48 business hours. For items with custom embroidery, please allow up to about eight business days.
What is the return policy?
You have 14 days after receipt to request a refund for an item that does not meet your expectations; exchanges are not permitted. Personalized items with embroidery cannot be returned or refunded. Please contact our customer service team in advance at bonjour@23maiparis.com.
