Our zip-upBreastfeeding sweaters s are designed around a simple idea: breastfeed by unzipping, not by lifting your sweater. Two side zippers—one on each side of the chest—let you breastfeed in seconds, while staying warm and discreet.
What is a zip-up nursing sweater?
It's a classic sweater or sweatshirt with a zipper opening on each side of the chest. When zipped up, it looks like any other sweater; when unzipped on one side, it provides direct access to the breast.
This is the most practical solution for winter: your stomach and back stay covered while breastfeeding. To see the entire collection, check out our winterBreastfeeding sweaters .
Why a zipper rather than another type of closure?
There are other fastening systems (buttons, layered fabric), but the zipper has several practical advantages:
- it opens and closes with just one hand;
- It provides broad and direct access to the interior;
- It remains unobtrusive when closed;
- It leaves nothing exposed: only the side used for feeding opens.
This is the system we use for all our items, from T-shirts to sweaters made of knit.
How do I open and close the zipper?
The zipper is located on the side of the sweater, at chest level. Unzip it on the side you’re feeding from, pull the fabric slightly aside, and your baby can latch on. There’s no need to lift the sweater or take it off.
Once you're done breastfeeding, just zip it back up: the sweater looks just like it did before. With a little practice, it becomes second nature—even when you're half asleep.
What zippered styles do you offer?
All of our nursing sweaters and sweatshirts have zippers. You'll find:
- knit sweaters: ALMA, ASSIA, COSSIMA, CHIARA, LOU, EMMA;
- fleece sweatshirts, either solid-colored or with a slogan;
- hooded sweaters for a casual look;
- embroidered designs that can be personalized.
Prices range from about €34.50 for certain models on sale to €81. See also our "Breastfeeding sweaters " at knit.
Is the zipper sturdy and comfortable?
Our zippers are chosen for their durability: they can withstand being opened repeatedly for multiple feedings a day, as well as frequent washing. They are placed on the side of the sweater, away from areas that rub against the baby.
To extend their lifespan, always fasten them before putting the sweater in the washing machine, and avoid pulling on them if they catch on a thread from knit.
Is it possible to breastfeed discreetly with a zipper?
Yes, that’s actually one of the main advantages of the side zipper. Only the side where the baby is feeding opens—the belly, back, and neckline remain covered. From the outside, all you see is a mom holding her baby close.
Whether you're at a café, on public transportation, or at a friend's house, you don't have to hide away. For more tips, read our article on discreet breastfeeding.
How do you layer multiple zip-up sweaters?
Since all our clothes have zippers in the same place, you can layer a Breastfeeding t-shirt and a sweater: just open both zippers on the same side, and you can breastfeed without having to lift anything.
This is especially helpful in the winter, when people often wear two layers. For more ideas, check out our layering options for nursing clothes.
What size should I choose?
Choose your usual pre-pregnancy size: our cuts accommodate postpartum body changes. If you plan to wear a layer underneath, or if you prefer loose-fitting sweaters, choose the next size up.
The product pages list the model's height and size, which is helpful for getting your bearings.
Can you wear a zip-up sweater while you're pregnant?
Yes. By choosing a size larger, our sweaters leave room for your growing belly throughout your winter pregnancy. The zippers stay closed and go unnoticed.
This will help you get familiar with the system before your first feedings. Check out our maternity and nursing sweaters, too.
Can you continue to wear it after breastfeeding?
Yes. With the zippers closed, it's just like any other sweater—one you'll continue to wear every winter, long after weaning.
The discreet zipper doesn't get in the way at all—that's what makes these sweaters durable and cost-effective.
How do you care for a zip-up sweater?
Wash it at 30 °C on the delicate or wool cycle, inside out, with the zippers closed to protect them. A laundry bag prevents the knit from getting caught in the zipper.
Dry it flat to help it retain its shape; avoid using a dryer, and never iron directly over embroidery. Specific instructions are listed on each product page.
How long does it take for the clothing to be shipped?
Clothing is shipped within 48 business hours. For items with custom embroidery, please allow up to about eight business days.
What is the return policy?
You have 14 days after receipt to request a refund for an item that does not meet your expectations; exchanges are not permitted. Personalized items with embroidery cannot be returned or refunded. Please contact our customer service team in advance at bonjour@23maiparis.com.
