Our guide to Breastfeeding sweaters at knit helps you choose the piece that’s right for you: thickness, neckline, color, and style. All of our knitwear and fleece pieces feature two side zippers for easy breastfeeding—without having to take off your sweater or expose your skin to the cold.
What is a nursing sweater made of " knit "?
This is a knitted sweater with a hidden zipper opening on each side of the chest. It’s worn like a regular sweater, but allows for breastfeeding by opening only the side you’re feeding from: the baby can access the breast, and the rest of the sweater stays in place.
knit s are more polished and stylish than sweatshirts: they're perfect for the office, outings, and special occasions. For more casual styles, check out our nursing sweatshirts.
How do you choose the thickness of your knit ?
For very cold days, choose a thick, dense knit with a high collar. For mid-season or heated indoor spaces, a softer knit with a round neck is sufficient, especially if you're layering.
If you're not sure, go for a medium-weight sweater that you can wear with or without a coat. For the warmest options, check out our warmBreastfeeding sweaters .
Which collar should I choose?
Each collar has its own purpose:
- The crew neck (ASSIA, COSSIMA) is versatile and allows a T-shirt to peek out;
- The high neck (ALMA) protects the neck—ideal for very cold weather;
- The zippered trucker collar (CHIARA) can be adjusted depending on the temperature and gives the garment a sportier look.
For a very dressy knit , the COSSIMA with its gold buttons is perfect for special occasions. See also our ecruBreastfeeding sweaters .
knit or sweatshirt: what's the difference?
The knit is more elegant, more structured, and easy to wear to the office. The sweatshirt is more casual, fleece-lined, and often features a slogan or embroidery.
This collection brings together both styles—from the most formal to the most casual—all featuring the same closure system. Prices range from about €34.50 for certain models on sale to €81.
How does the opening work in a " knit "?
Each sweater has two zippers, one on each side of the chest. You open the one on the feeding side: your baby has direct access to the breast, and the rest of the sweater stays in place.
On certain knitwear items, such as ALMA, the openings may have slight irregularities due to the zippers sewn onto the fabric. When zipped up, they blend seamlessly into the knit.
Which colors should you choose?
Start with a neutral color that goes with everything: ecru, gray, navy, or black. These colors work from season to season and are easy to layer.
Then add a bolder shade, such as burgundy or beige, for some variety. Check out our gray, black, and beige sweaters.
How can I stay warm while breastfeeding?
Wear a Breastfeeding t-shirt base layer under your sweater: when you unzip it, your stomach stays covered. Since the zippers are in the same place on all our clothes, you unzip both layers on the same side.
For more tips, read our article on how to layer up in winter while breastfeeding.
Is the " knit " a discreet way to breastfeed in public?
Yes. The thick " knit " effectively conceals the opening, and only the side used for feeding opens: from the outside, all you see is a mother holding her baby close.
For more tips, read our article on discreet breastfeeding.
What size should I choose?
Choose your usual pre-pregnancy size. If you plan to wear a layer underneath, or if you like loose-fitting sweaters, choose the next size up.
The product pages list the model's height and size, which is helpful for getting your bearings.
Can it be worn during pregnancy and after breastfeeding?
Yes. By choosing a size larger, our sweaters provide room for your belly during a winter of pregnancy, and then transition seamlessly to breastfeeding thanks to the zippers.
Once you've broken them in and zipped them up, they're just like any other sweater—ones you'll wear every winter.
How do you care for a sweater made of " knit "?
Wash it at 30 °C on the delicate or wool cycle, inside out with the zippers closed, ideally in a laundry bag.
Lay it flat to dry so it retains its shape, and avoid the dryer, which can cause the knit to felt. Specific instructions are listed on each product page.
How long does it take for the clothing to be shipped?
Clothing is shipped within 48 business hours. For items with custom embroidery, please allow up to about eight business days.
What is the return policy?
You have 14 days after receipt to request a refund for an item that does not meet your expectations; exchanges are not permitted. Personalized items with embroidery cannot be returned or refunded. Please contact our customer service team in advance at bonjour@23maiparis.com.
