Heat wave, apartment without air conditioning, vacation in the South: breastfeeding when the temperature exceeds 30 °C requires the right clothing. Our lightweight cotton nursing clothes for hot weather stay comfortable even in the height of summer, and the side zipper lets you breastfeed without taking anything off.
What is nursing clothing for hot weather?
This piece is designed for the hottest days: lightweight, breathable cotton; short-sleeved or sleeveless styles; and cuts that don’t make the fabric cling to the skin. The goal: to minimize sweating and that damp feeling, especially while breastfeeding.
Each piece features a nursing opening on the side. No need to wear a nursing tank top under a regular top—one layer is all you need, and that’s exactly what you want during a heat wave. Check out our summer nursing clothes, too.
Why is it harder to tolerate the heat when you're breastfeeding?
After giving birth, hormonal changes often cause hot flashes and night sweats, especially at night. Added to this is the warmth of your baby, who snuggles up against you for several hours a day during feedings.
The result: we get hot faster and more often than others. Clothing made from natural, lightweight fabrics that are easy to open really makes a difference in everyday life. Check out our breathableBreastfeeding t-shirts .
What clothes should you wear during a heat wave?
- A breathable nursing tank top—the coolest piece.
- A breathable, short-sleeved " Breastfeeding t-shirt " for going out.
- A quick and easyBreastfeeding dress —just one step, and you're done.
- A Breastfeeding nightdress for sweltering nights.
Opt for light colors (white, ecru, beige), which absorb less heat from the sun than dark shades. Be sure to pack a change of clothes as well: when it’s very hot, you’ll often want to change in the middle of the day. See our white nursing clothes.
How should you dress for breastfeeding when it's very hot?
The golden rule: just one layer. A tank top or a Breastfeeding t-shirt paired with shorts, a skirt, or loose-fitting pants is enough. Avoid synthetic fabrics and overly tight fits, which trap sweat.
When heading out into direct sunlight, wear an open cotton shirt that protects your shoulders without making you feel hot. In air-conditioned spaces, it also helps prevent temperature shock. For more ideas, check out our sleeveless nursing clothes.
How does the side zipper work?
A discreet zipper is located on the side of the garment. It can be opened with one hand—while holding the baby in the other arm—without having to lift the top or lower a strap. The rest of the fabric stays in place, and air continues to circulate.
When zipped up, it’s invisible. You can breastfeed on a patio, at the beach, or on the train without a nursing cover, which adds an extra layer and keeps you warm in the summer. See all our zippered nursing clothes.
How can I stay cool while breastfeeding?
Settle into the coolest room in the house, with the shutters closed during the day. Place a cotton diaper between your arm and your baby’s skin: it absorbs sweat and keeps your skin from sticking to each other.
Always keep a bottle of water within reach: breastfeeding makes you thirsty, especially during a heat wave. Drink during every feeding, without waiting until you feel thirsty. For more information, read our article on hydration and breastfeeding in the summer.
What should I wear at night for breastfeeding during a heat wave?
Hot nights are often the hardest: night sweats, frequent feedings, and a room that won’t cool down. Choose a light cotton nightgown or nursing tank top, paired with shorts: as little fabric as possible, but enough to stay covered while breastfeeding.
The zipper opens in the dark, with one hand, without having to sit up completely. Keep a change of clothes next to the bed if you sweat a lot. See our Breastfeeding night dresses.
How do I choose the right size?
Choose your usual size. Our styles are already cut with plenty of room, while keeping the zipper in the right place for comfortable breastfeeding.
If you're unsure which size to choose, check the size guide on each product page. A garment that's too big isn't necessarily cooler: the nursing opening might not sit in the right place. See our lightweight nursing clothes.
Can you wear them during pregnancy?
Yes. Being pregnant in the summer can often be challenging, especially during the third trimester. Loose-fitting styles made of lightweight cotton accommodate your growing belly without constricting it and remain comfortable even in the heat.
After the baby is born, the side zipper comes in handy forbreastfeeding: you can keep wearing the same pieces from one summer to the next. See also our summer maternity tops.
How do you care for lightweight cotton clothing?
In the summer, you wash clothes more often: washing at 30 °C, inside out with the zipper closed, is enough to remove sweat while preserving the cotton. Avoid the dryer, which can cause the fabric to shrink.
Air-dry in the shade to preserve the colors: lightweight cotton dries quickly in warm weather. Always follow the care instructions on each garment's label.
How long does delivery take?
Clothing is shipped within 48 business hours. For items with custom embroidery, please allow up to about eight business days.
What is the return policy?
You have 14 days after receipt to request a refund for an item that does not meet your expectations; exchanges are not permitted. Personalized items with embroidery cannot be returned or refunded. Please contact our customer service team in advance at bonjour@23maiparis.com.
