Our side-opening "Breastfeeding sweaters " feature a tried-and-true design: two side zippers—one on each side of the chest—hidden in the seam. You can breastfeed by opening the side on the feeding side, without lifting your sweater or exposing your stomach to the cold.
What is a side opening?
It is a zipper located on the side of the sweater, at chest level, rather than on the front or at the neckline. It provides direct access to the breast while keeping the rest of the sweater in place.
When buttoned up, it blends into the side seam: the sweater looks just like any other sweater. For the entire collection, see our Breastfeeding sweaters.
Why choose a side opening over another type?
Front openings (buttons, wrap-around, zippered collar) often require you to expose your décolletage or pull on the fabric. A side opening has three advantages:
- modesty: the neckline and stomach remain covered;
- Speed: a zipper you can open with one hand—no need to undo anything;
- warmth: only the side where the baby nurses opens; the rest of the sweater keeps the baby warm.
This is the system we use on all our clothing, from T-shirts to sweaters made of knit.
How do I open and close the side zipper?
The zipper is located on the side of the sweater, just below the chest. Unzip it on the side where the baby is feeding, pull the fabric slightly aside, and the baby can access the breast. No need to lift any clothing.
Once you're done feeding, you zip it up with one hand, and the sweater looks just like it did before. With a little practice, it becomes second nature—even when you're half asleep.
What side-opening sweaters do you offer?
All of our nursing sweaters and sweatshirts feature this opening. The collection includes:
- knit sweaters: ALMA, ASSIA, COSSIMA, CHIARA;
- fleece sweatshirts, either solid-colored or with a slogan;
- hooded sweaters for a casual look.
Prices range from about €34.50 for certain models on sale to €81. See also our zip-upBreastfeeding sweaters .
Is the side opening visible?
No: on the " knit " or the fleece, the zipper blends into the seam. You can only tell it's there if you look very closely.
On the knit fabric, slight irregularities may appear around the zippers sewn onto the knit, but they are barely noticeable.
Is it possible to breastfeed discreetly while wearing a sweater with a side opening?
Yes, that's the whole point of the system. From the outside, all you see is a mother holding her baby close, with no exposed stomach, back, or cleavage.
Whether you're at a café, on public transportation, or at a friend's house, you don't have to hide away. For more tips, read our article on discreet breastfeeding.
How do you layer multiple pieces with side openings?
Since all our clothes have zippers in the same place, you can layer a Breastfeeding t-shirt and a sweater: just open both zippers on the same side, and you can breastfeed without having to lift anything.
This is especially helpful in winter, when you often wear two layers. For more tips, read our article on how to layer your clothes in winter while breastfeeding.
What size should I choose?
Choose your usual pre-pregnancy size: our cuts are designed to accommodate postpartum body changes. If you plan to wear a base layer, choose the next size up.
The product pages list the model's height and size, which is helpful for getting your bearings.
Can it be worn during pregnancy and after breastfeeding?
Yes. By choosing a size larger, our sweaters provide room for your belly during a winter of pregnancy, and then transition seamlessly to breastfeeding thanks to the zippers.
Once you've broken them in and zipped them up, they're just like any other sweater—ones you'll keep wearing every winter.
How do you care for a zip-up sweater?
Wash it at 30 °C on the delicate or wool cycle, inside out, with the zippers closed to protect them. A laundry bag prevents the knit from getting caught in the zipper.
Lay the knit flat to dry; avoid using a dryer, and never iron directly over the embroidery. Specific instructions are listed on each product page.
How long does it take for the clothing to be shipped?
Clothing is shipped within 48 business hours. For items with custom embroidery, please allow up to about eight business days.
What is the return policy?
You have 14 days after receipt to request a refund for an item that does not meet your expectations; exchanges are not permitted. Personalized items with embroidery cannot be returned or refunded. Please contact our customer service team in advance at bonjour@23maiparis.com.
